Mahatma Gandhi My Idol

Gandhi in London, at the age of 18, working as a Barrister
(http://thinkorthwim.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/01/gandhi-1891.jpg)
Mohamdas Karamchand Gandhi, who was also known as Mahatma, "Great Soul" Gandhi, was a hero, as well as a political and spiritual leader of India. He was of the Hindu faith. Mohandas brought India to independence by using non-violent resistance. He thought that there was injustice being served to the Indians, especially to the immigrants by the South Africans. Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869 in Porbandar, Kathiawar, now known as Gujarat. Gandhi passed away at the age of 78 on January 30, 1948. Mahatma Gandhi was brought up in India near Rajkot, where he did most of his studies. In 1888, Gandhi went to London, leaving his wife and son behind, to pursue his degree in law. Later in 1893, Gandhi went to South Africa to work and found that there was a lot of prejudice towards Indians. That was the reason Gandhi began protesting and eventually he became an inspiring hero for millions. The three main qualities that define Gandhi as a hero are his strong leadership, simplicity and bravery.
Leadership was one of Gandhi's heroic qualities. One way he demonstrated leadership was by encouraging people in his village to start using homespun clothing. Homespun was one of Gandhi’s favorite hobbies. Introducing homespun to his village promised the growth of the village’s economy. The poor became employed to make homespun clothes for others in the village and outside of their own village. This drastically diminished the poverty in Gandhi’s village. Moreover, Gandhi ended the issue of discrimination against untouchables. Back in those days, the Hindus used to discriminate against the untouchables, who were their own kind but just low in the caste system. The untouchables are just another word to describe poor, less educated people who really didn’t fit in with the middle class people. Gandhi made the Hindus realize that what British people were doing to them is the same thing that they were doing to the untouchables. This made the Hindus realize what they were doing to the untouchables. Last but not least, the Indian Independence Movement was the all-time heroic deed led by Gandhi. This movement was accomplished in 1947 by Mahatma. This movement took place because India was governed by the British, and Gandhi wanted India to become independent. Therefore, Gandhi showcased many outstanding leadership skills that made him a hero

Simplicity is the second most heroic quality that Gandhi demonstrated. Gandhi believed in living a simple life. He wanted a simple life, with only the necessities that he needed. Even though he was a barrister (a lawyer), he had no arrogance. He dressed like a poor person and he only wore clothes that were homespun, made out of khadi (cotton). He was a vegetarian and then became a fruitarian; many days he would go without eating and would not complain. He was also a man of truth because everything he did and said, he did it with truth. Because he believed in truth, he wrote a book titled, The Story of My Experiments with Truth. Moreover, even though he did many heroic things, he claimed to be an average man: "I claim to be no more than an average man with less than average ability" (pg 112). This quote tells the readers that he did not want to be known as Gandhi, he did not want everyone worshiping him, and he was just proving that he is an average person like others. In addition, what made him a hero can make anyone a hero, only if they have the will to do the right thing and if they believe in truth, nonviolence and creating peace among others. As a result, Gandhi believed that simplicity and truth can make anyone a hero.

Bravery is another quality that describes Gandhi. Gandhi did many big things that show how brave he was. The first example of his brave work was the Dandi March. The Dandi March was an Indian march led by Gandhi for salt. This was the first act of opposition towards the British and the beginning of the movement to get India's independence. Gandhi broke the Salt Law made by the British and was imprisoned for many years. The Dandi March, with more than enough Indians and with the support of Gandhi, diminished the Salt Tax that people had to pay. Gandhi was also very brave to fight for his country on his own and also to sacrifice himself. Many times he got beaten up by the British people, but he did not say one word. He did not execute any type of violent behavior towards them. This is because he was a strong believer in nonviolence. Lastly, Gandhi showed bravery by doing what he believed was right. He believed that things can be done with love and not war, which definitely results in peace. He believed in his own principles for many years till he died, and he fought for India believing that the only way to end the hatred and war is through peace and love. For that reason, Gandhi is a true hero to all because of his bravery and what he did for India’s independence.

In conclusion, Gandhi was an astonishing hero. He possessed countless qualities, many things that an ordinary person could not have had. He set several examples for our countries to look up to and learn from. He fought for something that he believed in and he never gave up. He fought through all the obstacles that came his way with love and peace. Leadership, simplicity and bravery were the three most outstanding qualities in Gandhi.
"Nonviolence is not a garment to be put on and off at will. Its seat is in the heart, and it must be an inseparable part of our being." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Influence

Good evening everyone, we meet again in this lovely evening with another entry in my class blog. So today i would like to talk about Influence. What is influence? And how to have it?

Source: http://innetwork.net/2013/02/what-is-influence-and-how-to-have-it/
Influence is being able to affect an action. If you create, alter, inspire or change someone’s behaviour, you have influenced them. From a business perspective, influence is key.  Marketers hope to influence consumer spending decisions to purchase their goods and services. On an individual level, having influence within your social relationships has many benefits and could help to further your professional career.

So, the question is, how can one achieve influence?

4 Criteria of Influence

To have influence , one must establish 4 criteria with those they hope to influence: trust, authority, the ‘so what’, and a connection.

Source: http://innetwork.net/2013/02/what-is-influence-and-how-to-have-it/

Trust

Establishing trust with consumers is key to influencing their behaviour.  This one is fairly straight forward.  For example, you as a consumer, are only going to do what you trust to be is best for you.  As a marketer, you must establish a level of trust with your consumers, and create a belief that your product or service or whatever, is what is best for them.
Source: Google Image

Authority

By authority, I mean you have established some level of ‘I know what I am talking about’.  Authority, in this sense, means that you have established some level of expertise or given good reason for others to believe in what you are saying.
Source : Google Image

‘So what’?

Why should people believe you? Of what benefit is it to them? People are primarily self-motivated- give them a reason to care.

Connection

And finally, establish some kind of connection with the people you hope to influence.  Personally, I think this is one level that frequently is overlooked, especially in business.   I can think of several brands (Loblaw’s President’s Choice, for example) who are doing this well and showing the importance of it. Do it.
Think about who influences you. Think about your relationship with them. Do you see each condition of influence within that relationship? Next time your hoping to influence someone, think about the nature of the relationship you currently have with that person and try to establish these aspects within it.

Leadership Style Onboard My Ship

Hello there everyone! We meet again in my blog post after quite sometime didn’t post anything in here. So in this entry, i would like to write about Leadership style onboard my ship. Speciafically i will tell about 1 of my Captain onboard. I sailed onboard JM Sutera 2, a Product/Chemical Tanker trading South East Asia.

JM Sutera 2

So onboard my ship, i mix with one Captain, a captain who have a leadership style like a lion. He’s always right and no one can challenge him on anything. This makes it hard for the officers to confront him and tell their opinion on something. I think this is not a good leadership style because a leader should also hear opinion from others. A leader cannot make decision on his own because its important to also hear opinion from others.

Source: Google Image

Source : Google Image
So basically an opinion from others does count towards the decision made by a leader. So as a leader , or a Master who is the oveall incharge onboard ship, should also accept opinion and suggestions from others. Don’t be selfish or too ego because it might led to incidents and accidents.

My Idol : Elon Musk

Credit:www.telegraph.co.uk

Since 1972 when the last Apollo mission landed on the moon, no one has been to the moon, or even out of Low Earth Orbit. One person who noticed, and asked why, is Elon Musk. He looked into why and found that the main reason space exploration slowed almost to a stop was cost. Elon Reeve Musk was born on June 28th, 1971 in South Africa. When he was first able, he emigrated to Canada, and later went  to the United States to go to school. He learned a wide variety of things, mainly science related, then became an entrepreneur. He founded many companies, including Zip2, Paypal, Tesla Motors, SpaceX, and SolarCity, quickly becoming a multimillionaire. He started each company with an idea on how to improve the world. Space Exploration Technologies Corp. is Musk's company to make space travel cheaper and to push space exploration forward (Newsmakers: Elon Musk). A hero must be someone that is willing to do what is right for the benefit of the whole world, and not just himself. Elon Musk is an inspirational hero because he is trying to make space flight affordable for the common person, he is reducing our carbon footprint, and he is trying to save humanity from extinction.

Elon Musk is inspirational to me because of the many selfless things that he did to benefit the entire world, rather than just himself. Musk has reduced the cost of spaceflight with his many new innovations to improve space flight and bring its price down. He is also helping to reduce the amount of CO2 pollution in the world caused by humans. One of Musk's life goal that he is working towards at a fast pace, is to get humans multiplanetary in case of a cataclysmic event, so that the human race will still survive. Elon Musk is an inspiration to me because he tries so hard to achieve goals for the benefit of the whole human race, and not just for his own personal benefit. A friend and coworker of Musk said, "The one major important distinction that sets him apart is his inability to consider failure.  It simply is not even in his thought process.  He cannot conceive of failure and that is truly remarkable.  It doesn't matter if [he is] going up against the banking system (Paypal), going up against the entire aerospace industry (SpaceX) or going up against the US auto industry (Tesla).  He can't imagine NOT succeeding and that is a very critical trait that leads him ultimately to success" (Cantrell). His friend sees that he is attempting the "impossible" to cause things to happen that will benefit the entire world. Elon Musk saw that space exploration had not explored any farther out since 1972, and he decided that he wanted to be the catalyst to reinvigorate space innovation. Quickly, he started making advances in that field and many others for the benefit of everyone in the world.

Turns Out You've Been Pouring Chili Sauce Wrong This Whole Time

There's a really easy way to avoid that dreaded sauce avalanche

We're all probably a little too familiar with the frustrations of trying to get ketchup and chili sauce out of a glass bottle

credit: PBH2
Unfortunately, slapping the bottom of the bottle to get the sauce out has only two possible results: You get nothing, or you get a sauce avalanche. There's no in-between.

credit: Imgur
Turns out we've been doing it all wrong! Holding your bottle straight-down and hitting the bottom won't actually make the sauce come out. In fact, it forces the sauce back inside the bottle.

In order for the sauce to flow out of the bottle, air has to squeeze in on one side of the bottle's neck. Also, ketchup and chili sauce have the unusual condition of being both solid and liquid, which means they respond to different Newtonian laws.

According to a TED-Ed video by George Zaidan, their thickness and viscosity change based on how long, how hard and how fast you push. When you hit and shake the bottle gently, the sauce behaves like solid and remains in the bottle. When you hit the bottle hard and vigorously, the spherical particles break down and flow too easily out of the bottle, resulting in all that messy glob on your food.

There's actually a perfectly simple way to get your sauce out of the bottle according to the amount you want! All you need to do is hold your bottle at an angle and tap the neck area.

And voilà - perfect amount every time!

Don't Know Where To Makan? This New App Will Tell You Where To Eat Based On Your Mood

No more discussing "where to eat?" for an hour before you decide!

You know that geram feeling when you're hungry but don't know what to eat so you ask someone, "What you wanna eat?" and it ends up making things worse?

Ya, of course you know. Where to eat? I don't know. Anything. No, I don't want that. Where YOU want to eat? I don't know, you decide. Anything...

It's the age-old question that has plagued our existence since the beginning of time.

credit: New Line Cinema

Ok, that's super dramatic. But the good news is that IPC Shopping Centre's app now has a feature that helps offer suggestions on where to eat based on your mood!

In collaboration with the music streaming app Spotify, the IPC Shopping Centre app has a really cool feature called The Mood Menu.

The Mood Menu analyses your recent playback history to track your current mood. Then the app matches food to your mood and suggests places to eat and drink at IPC Shopping Centre.

credit: SAYS
So, if the app determines that you're feeling happy, it will suggest places to get food that is more sour and less sweet :)

credit: SAYS
Meanwhile if you're feeling sleepy, the app will suggest a great place to have a cup of coffee; if you're in love, somewhere to indulge your sweet tooth; and loads of other moods too!

Check out all the yummy places we were recommended to try out to complement our happy mood:

credit: SAYS
The best part is that you can screenshot the suggestions to redeem special discounts from selected restaurants

credit: SAYS
Here are some of the restaurants that you can get freebies and discounts from with your Mood Menu suggestions:

- Nando's: One FREE 1/4 chicken with two sides, with purchase of three sets of 1/4 chicken with two sides
- Noodle Shack: 20% off all items

- And many more!

Check out all the offers and promos on IPC Shopping Centre's website.

The Mood Menu was created together with Professor Robin Dando from Cornell University, with insights from his landmark 2015 study as the basis of the Mood Menu’s ‘food and mood matching’ algorithm

Professor Dando hails from the world renown Department of Food Science in Cornell University. His most famous paper, published in the scientific journal 'Appetite', found that human moods have the ability to inhibit or accentuate sweet, salty, bitter, sour, or umami (savoury) flavours. According to his work, our taste perception changes based on many factors, including our emotional responses to pleasant and unpleasant real-life events.

For example, Professor Dando's study found that positive emotions enhance your sweet tooth.

Science aside, it's cool to have an app suggest places to eat based on the music you've been listening to.

In addition to The Mood Menu, the IPC Shopping Centre app also contains a store guide, parking information, latest promotions, and members-only promotions

On top of that, they'll also be offering FREE Wi-Fi throughout the shopping centre starting from now onwards.

With the app, you can now seamlessly connect to the free Wi-Fi for the whole day.*
