LEADERSHIP STYLE ONBOARD AND MY EXPERIENCE

Being a merchant navy officer, one of the most valuable criteria is the leadership during working onbaord. As we the navigating officer must well decision maker at any situation.

Let me share my experience on board which it really thought me how to be a firm and good leadership criteria. During my cadetship which I need collect 12 months of seatime, I have been sailed onboard MV MTT TAWAU, a container vessel.
I was sailing near coastal which I have to pass the world busiest straits, Singapore Straits. I have encounter alot of close quater situation. It is mean risk of collision occur. During the time, my Captain and the duty navigating officer were being a good team in making decision to avoid collision. My captain, he is the role model for me to be a good leader for overall ship.

Sometimes, Captain would not be on the bridge, at the same time the duty officer will be either 3rd officer or 2nd officer. They will be the one will take command of the ship and give command to the able-bodied seaman to steer at which course.

Being a cadet on-board have made me a different person that having the same leadership style to be good navigating officer. Besides, my chief officer is the overall incharge of the ship working management who handle the crew on-board.
