Leadership on The High Seas

Every person was born to be a leader even not to give a command to other person, we still a leader to ourself to lead and choose our own way in our life. Especially we as a students have very big responsible to complete our study and pass the examination with flying colours. In addition we studies in this our belove alma mater in Malaysian Maritime Academy which is mainly focus to become a captain onboard merchant vessel. It is very huge responsible once you become a captain to ensure and manouvre the ship to reach the destination to deliver the precious cargo which is worth million dollars safely to the charterer. A captain also responsible as the golden stripes on his shoulder to handle every single things onboard including small things happen onboard vessel.

Leader as a captain onboard merchant vessel to give command to his officers or crews is very important to ensure all crews are doing their task accordingly. Leadership onboard is totally different if we want to campare to manager or supervisor on land because every decision made by the captain need to take consideration every things including cargo onboard. If the captain make a wrong decision its can give bad impact to crew onboard and can leads to death due to accidents which might be happen anytime.
Myself during onboard
As I experienced during my 12 months seaphase onboard on product tanker vessel MT Alam Bakti, it clearly shows that the leadership of my captain really impress myself to make him as my idol to become captain of merchant ship one day. His name is Captain Nasiadka Janusz from Gdynia, Poland. Obiviously I can observe from his leadership that give very good impact to the crew and the surrounding of the ship. Firstly, He as a captain never take a matter for granted even simple things onboard. He always check the task that he give to their officer to ensure they doing the task properly and correctly. Then, he always give a due every task to their officer. This method can make officer more responsible to complete their job and make themselves to not delay their job and meet the dateline given by the captain.

Secondly, Captain Nasiadka always has a short management meeting every weekend with top 4 onboard to discuss anythings related to their job and to rectify any problem such as machinery problem in engine room or any defect of equipments on deck before arrival at port. This meeting to ensure all the equipment in good condition before start any cargo operation to avoid any bad consequences that can be happen due to mashinery problem.

After that, me as his only cadet onboard that really need knowledge to learn and someone to guide me to learn something new related to ship onboard. He always to ensure me to learned something new everyday. He will ask me anythings related to this career and guide me if I do not know how to answer his questions. He also do the same things to all crews that he always do an explaination how to do the task before delegate the task. Its shows the great leader not only give command but show us how to do. Im so grateful to have such a great captain during my first time experience onboard.

During my cadetship onboard, he was my captain for the first 7 months. I learned a lot from him especially from his leadership that he always show to the all crew. Im really admire him as a captain to command a ship. There still a lot of things and story about his leadership. Since my final just around the corner, i will share with all of you guys for the next entry. Lastly, i want to wish best of luck to all of you. Assalamualaikum.
